Trending is a breaking news story or segment that has recently caught the attention of the public and media. Breaking news is a type of journalism that requires the interruption of non-news programming or, in the case of network affiliates, a regular television or radio broadcast for live coverage. Generally, breaking news will be accompanied by a countdown sequence to give affiliated stations time to switch over to the network feed and begin their own coverage. Some breaking news stories will require sustained coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required many stations to interrupt their scheduled programs for several hours. Occasionally, breaking news will be covered with special reports, or with a “Newsflash” or “Special report” ticker during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
