Many airlines are blaming canceled flights and endless delays on a pilot shortage. But those in the cockpit say they’re forced to retire once they turn 65 years old due to what some say is an arbitrary rule. Currently, the main focus of a newspaper’s news is its headline, the biggest and boldest print in the centerfold. The goal of the headline is to grab the attention of prospective buyers. This is very different from the “trending” news, which is determined by the number of hits the story gets on the web. In fact, trending news is reader-driven; stories with ‘buzz’ tend to trend well, even if they have little impact on society.

Breaking news is a term used interchangeably with late-breaking news, special coverage, and news flash. Breaking news usually refers to the most significant story of the moment, which may be of immediate interest to viewers. Breaking news is sometimes used in place of “just in” to indicate that the story has already been reported by a news organization. Breaking news can also refer to a story that has been aired in a previous newscast, such as a celebrity’s death.

Breaking news during prime time can interrupt programming, especially new or highly rated shows. It can also interrupt the airing of a show that already has time to run. An example of this was the April 2017 Shayrat missile attack that interrupted ABC’s Scandal episode. If the news is significant enough, local stations may be allowed to break away from the network feed for a few minutes while the new episode was airing. If the breaking news is not of immediate interest to viewers, the local affiliate can join the network-wide “extended edition” of the show.
