About this Article

Trending is a breaking news segment that allows broadcasters to feature a top trending topic, along with an associated image, in the upper-right corner of the screen. The segment is typically short, and it can appear as a cut-in, alert crawl during regular programming, or as part of a nationally distributed newscast. Before 24-hour news networks existed, newsflash or special report breaks were reserved for the most urgent events that required stations to interrupt non-news programming (such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy). Special report breaks usually start with a distinctive graphic and a distinct music cue, and lower thirds and other graphics are often altered to convey urgency.
