Breaking news is a special segment of a television or radio broadcast in which the main program is interrupted for a brief period of time to report on breaking events that require immediate coverage. These events may be major, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or smaller, but still important stories such as a tornado warning. On radio, a station’s regular commercial breaks are usually replaced by breaking news reports using special graphic elements such as a countdown sequence and a distinctive music cue. During the broadcast, the network’s feed will be interrupted by its own countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch over and join the national feed.
