Trending is the section of Current News that talks about what is happening around you.
When breaking news occurs that requires an immediate interruption in non-news programming or, in the case of network news broadcasts, a live newscast, the network will usually alert its affiliate stations to the event and ask them to “stand by”. The network’s feed then switches to a countdown sequence for the affiliated stations to join, often overlaid with a distinctive opening graphic and a special music cue. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, this type of break was normally reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
