Trending is a section of the Current News website that talks about topics currently in the news. These can range from the latest developments on a breaking story, to a topic that is getting a lot of attention in popular culture, or even to an event that has recently made headlines. These stories are often featured in the News Ticker, but may also be highlighted by a red banner above the website’s main page or through a special report on the front page of the site. In the past, these types of reports were only used for events that warranted an interruption in regular programming or a cut-in on local television or radio stations.
For example, a major national news event such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy might cause a network to interrupt its regularly scheduled programming with a special report, which would usually begin with a countdown sequence, allowing affiliated stations to switch to the national feed and join the report.
