Breaking news is a term that refers to any news story which necessitates the interruption of non-news programming on television and radio, or of a regularly scheduled newscast. When an event occurs that warrants such an interruption, the network will usually begin a countdown sequence (often with a distinctive music cue) before interrupting. In addition, the station may also use lower third graphics to convey a sense of urgency. This type of breaking news is often more commonly seen on 24-hour news networks, which have anchors available for live interruption at any time. In North America, before the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were primarily reserved for extremely urgent stories, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Alternatively, some stations utilize “newsflash” or “Special Report” tickers during regular programming, lessening the need for break-ins.
