Trending is a term used to describe news that is popular on social media or in search engines. A story can trend for a variety of reasons, from high views to a spike in search engine traffic. Keeping an eye on the trends can help journalists better anticipate what content their audience will find most relevant and interesting.

A journalist’s area of expertise, typically defined by a specific topic like politics, sports or crime. Journalists with a strong beat have the in-depth knowledge and strong connections to deliver more impactful stories.

Often found under a main article, a sidebar offers additional context or a different perspective on the story’s content and angle. For example, if a major policy change is the focus of a news piece, a sidebar might highlight the impact of previous policies on the same issue or offer an expert opinion on the subject.

A catchy snippet of a story, often in larger or stylized text, that grabs readers’ attention and makes them want to learn more. It’s a way to add relevance, urgency or emotion to an otherwise dry or boring piece.

The percentage of visitors who land on a news article or website and then leave without diving further. Journalists use bounce rates to identify what content is engaging or not, tweaking headlines, content and design to keep readers from hitting the back button.
