Breaking news is the term for a news story that elicits immediate, urgent coverage, requiring stations to interrupt their normal programming. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were typically reserved for significant events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, that triggered nationwide coverage and required numerous station affiliates to interrupt their regular programming to report the event live. When breaking news occurs, a special graphic, often accompanied by a distinct music cue, is displayed on-screen to signal the break in regular programming. Some national networks also use “Newsflash” or “Special report” tickers in place of cut-ins during regularly scheduled programming.
