Breaking news is a news story that warrants an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming (and, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts). During breaking news events, a station will usually pause its own program, and will then revert to the network feed with a countdown sequence, telling any affiliates to stand by for a break in coverage. The network feed is often overlaid with a special graphic and distinctive music cue, to emphasize its importance. This type of break in coverage is also known as a Newsflash, or a Special Report.
