Trending is a news segment that discusses current events in an informal, conversational manner. It may cover a wide range of topics. Often, it is used to fill in between regular segments on a newscast. It is also common on 24-hour news channels. When a breaking news event occurs that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network affiliates, a live regular newscast), the station will typically alert viewers to stand by and provide a countdown sequence for when the break will begin. The breaking news is usually accompanied by an audio open and a special graphics package.
