While it can refer to the newest developments, it is not always clear what constitutes breaking news. Some news organizations use “just in” instead of “breaking news”.
Breaking news can last several minutes or several hours. Longer news events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in November 1963, can last for days. In some cases, networks may integrate analysis of the story and make it available to viewers through satellite, phone, or studio. During extended news coverage, regular commercial advertising may be suspended. If you’re interested in a particular news story, check your local station’s listings.
