A breaking news story is an event of current interest that requires a television or radio station to interrupt normal programming in order to report it. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, interruptions were usually limited to exceptionally urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and then only if the news was expected to have a significant impact nationally or locally. When a breaking news story occurs, a network may call into its affiliates to ask them to halt their own local or regular programming and to join the newscast. The network’s feed then typically switches to a special graphic and countdown, with a distinct music cue.
