When a news event occurs that warrants immediate coverage, it is known as breaking news. This is typically an urgent matter that requires a live interruption of non-news programming or, in the case of national network affiliates with daily newscasts, a pause of the newscast to allow the affiliate stations to join a breaking news feed provided by the network. The interruption is usually accompanied by a distinct newsflash graphics sequence and a countdown to allow other affiliates time to switch over. News anchors may also introduce the report with a special introduction or lower third graphic that conveys urgency. In recent years, major network newscasts have used “Special Report” tickers during regularly scheduled programming that carries the same level of urgency to lessen the need for cut-ins.
Hallie Jackson takes a trip to New Mexico to shed more light on Jeffrey Epstein’s Zorro Ranch and why the government wasn’t investigating it sooner. Plus, a Boston queer group gives LGBTQ immigrants wellness allowances to help them adjust to life in America. All this and more on Current News.
