Breaking news is an alert in television or radio broadcasting that an important, time-sensitive story has elicited national interest and warrants immediate interruption of non-news programming or, in the case of network television, of regularly scheduled newscasts. Depending on the nature of the event, the breaking news may be accompanied by a special opening graphic and music cue, station identification and/or a ticker for the story, all of which are meant to convey urgency and create an immersive experience. The term is most commonly used for serious events requiring nationwide coverage such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
