For decades, television news has dominated the airwaves. Despite its popularity, the format has had a hard time competing with streaming news. It’s not just a matter of convenience. Streaming has created a more customizable experience that travels wherever the viewer goes.
The proliferation of cable and other streaming services has meant that the number of media choices has risen dramatically. This has encouraged voters to sink deeper into political silos. In fact, in a 2005 paper, Princeton University scholar Markus Prior suggested that the growing variety of news sources encouraged voters to settle into partisan political groups.
Streaming has made it possible for viewers to customize their news experience. They can choose from live news, reruns, documentaries, and news analysis. Streaming also allows networks to archive content.
Streaming has also been able to reach audiences that may not pay for TV. Many commercial-averse viewers will find streaming news appealing, as it is accessible on any device.
Some of the major news networks are eager to enter the streaming market. These include CBS News, ABC News, and Fox News.
Fox has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its Fox Nation streaming app. Meanwhile, CBS News plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022. That’s twice as much as the amount of time its regular nightly news airs.
Other notable names in the streaming arena include Bloomberg, Cheddar, Newsy, and Al Jazeera. Each one has planted its flag in the streaming frontier.
