When an event happens that is so newsworthy as to warrant interrupting regular programming, a special break-in report may be broadcast. This typically consists of an alert crawl or a “Newsflash” graphic overlaid with a distinctive music cue, along with a countdown sequence to allow network affiliate stations to join the feed. The report may last only a few minutes, or it can be sustained for hours or even days. Historically, such interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent events that demanded nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Other types of breaking news include weather events, where localized, long-form reports are broadcast instead of cut-ins and lower thirds.
