Streaming has changed how we see and hear news. Previously, we had to wait for the news wheel to turn. Now we can get the latest news wherever and whenever we want.
Streaming makes video news universal. It reduces the scarcity of news and allows networks to archive content. This makes building news libraries economical. The new streaming technologies also allow viewers to customize their experience.
The most obvious effect of streaming news is its ability to reach an audience. News organizations like NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations. Historically, broadcast news has been a lucrative business. But a recent study found that more Americans are watching streaming programming than are watching broadcast TV.
Despite this, many of the major news networks have high hopes for their streaming products. Rather than hype the product, these companies focus on the simple fact that they can offer audiences a superior experience.
In addition to providing news, these streaming services offer documentaries, reruns, and analysis. Combined, the three networks earned nearly $3 billion in profit in 2020.
Streaming has already been a big hit with niche audiences. For example, Fox Nation has attracted 1.5 million subscribers. And, if this number continues to grow, it could help bolster the network’s fortunes.
Streaming has the potential to reshape political news coverage. That’s because online video streaming will not be bound by expensive negotiations with cable companies. As a result, more overtly political news operations are likely to pop up.
