Historically, TV news has been a profitable business. It has spawned several cable networks and live events. But new technology is reshaping the way we get our news.

Streaming video has emerged as a way to deliver timely news, and the major news networks have high hopes for it. Streaming news can be watched on-demand, and it allows networks to archive content for later use. And it has proven to attract niche audiences.

Despite the growing popularity of streaming, some news networks are still hesitant to enter this new market. They don’t want to overhype it, or they risk losing subscribers.

CBS News has an aggressive local streaming news strategy. In 2022, the network plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news. That’s four times the amount it typically streams.

Streaming has also enabled news networks to serve a much larger audience than they could through traditional broadcast. The resulting siloed results are similar to the way cable operates, but with the added advantage of being available to viewers wherever they are.

With streaming, the news wheel can be turned on a dime, and viewers are free to customize their viewing experience. Some news outlets, such as NBC News Now, repurpose programming from cable channels.

Other streams, such as NewsBreak, allow users to express themselves, block certain topics, and follow trending topics. They also provide election results.

Streaming has been a boon to news networks, and the broader culture. Previously, print was stuck in a time warp, but the advent of the internet has made it possible to access current news at any time.
