Breaking news is a broadcast news report that requires a station to interrupt current or regularly scheduled programming in order to cover the event. The breaking news announcement is usually accompanied by a distinctive music cue, as well as an alert graphic. A news anchor then introduces the story. Depending on the severity of the event, and its national or international implications, the program interruption may be short or continue for hours or days. Before 24-hour news networks, such breaks were limited to major, urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required stations across the nation to halt programming for live coverage.
