When a breaking news event occurs that elicits nationwide coverage and requires a broadcast station to interrupt current non-news programming or their regularly scheduled newscast, the network will usually send out an alert to all of its affiliates, telling them to stand by. The current newscast will then pause, and a countdown sequence may be seen on-screen to allow stations to switch over to the network feed. This is known as a newsflash or special report (see below). Occasionally, a lower third or other graphic will be changed to indicate that an alert has been issued. This is known as an emergency cut-in.
