A breaking news story is a news event that requires immediate coverage and whose urgency warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of 24-hour news channels, of regularly scheduled newscasts) to inform the public about it. A network typically alerts its affiliate stations to the upcoming break in programming, asking them to stand by and switch over to the network feed as soon as possible. This process is commonly known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special report.” Often, lower thirds and other graphics will be modified to indicate the urgency of the news item at hand. This was common practice before the introduction of satellite and cable networks, when a serious breaking story would require an entire television or radio station to interrupt regular programming.
