Trending is the term used for breaking news stories that are gaining popularity or traction on social media. These stories are highlighted as they rise in the trending list and are referred to by many media outlets such as CNN, ABC, and CBS. Breaking news is usually reported by a reporter on-site or remotely via satellite, live feed, or telephone. In the past, non-news broadcasts would be interrupted for breaking news events such as severe weather or the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, requiring stations to interrupt regular programming and use cut-ins or alert crawls. This was before 24-hour news networks were common.
