In television and radio broadcasting, breaking news is an event that occurs during non-news programming or a regular scheduled network or station newscast that necessitates the immediate interruption of those programs for live reporting on the story. The newscast is usually paused and the network feed is replaced by a countdown sequence, followed by the appearance of an opening graphic (or “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”) overlaid with distinctive music cues and often with altered lower thirds to convey the urgency of the situation. Breaking news coverage is more common today since the rise of 24-hour news networks that can interrupt regularly scheduled programming at will, reducing the need for newscast cut-ins and alert crawls during other programs.
