Breaking news is a news report about a current event that requires an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming on television and radio, or of regular newscasts if the event is considered of sufficient importance. The network feed will usually pause while affiliate stations may switch to the breaking news, which will begin with a special opening graphic and a distinctive music cue. This type of news report is often referred to as a “Newsflash” or a “Special report.” It was once common in North America for breaking news events to interrupt scheduled programming, but since the advent of 24-hour news networks that have anchors available to break stories at any time, this has become less common.
