The term “breaking news” refers to any event that is sufficiently urgent to interrupt non-news programming on a network or station (or, in the case of a 24-hour news channel, to stop live coverage and replace it with an instantaneous news feed). This type of reporting is often accompanied by special graphics, a countdown sequence, and distinctive music cues, indicating that an important story has occurred.
*The bodies of all eight skiers killed in an avalanche at Lake Tahoe have been recovered. *The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has cleared the way for a Louisiana law requiring displays of the Ten Commandments in public schools to take effect.
Before the rise of 24-hour news networks, breaking news was usually limited to severe weather events, such as a tornado warning or landfalling hurricane, which warranted cutting into regular programming. Breaking news is now commonplace at major networks and 24-hour cable channels, which typically have anchors standing by to interrupt current non-news programming at any time.
