Trending articles are often accompanied by a short video clip that highlights the most popular stories of the day. Trending articles are a staple of most major news websites. The term is also used to describe a breaking news story that requires a national network affiliate’s non-news programming to be interrupted for live coverage (or occasionally, regularly scheduled newscasts). This type of event may require a “Newsflash” or a special report, as well as a countdown graphic and distinctive music cue, similar to the graphics used by CBS News on the day of the assassination of John F. Kennedy; this was a rare occurrence prior to the launch of 24-hour news networks.
