When a breaking news event occurs that is sufficiently serious to interrupt current non-news programming (or, in the case of national network broadcasts with regular scheduled newscasts, their reruns) or regularly scheduled live news coverage, a special alert graphic and countdown sequence may be used on screen. Often, station identifications will be superimposed over the top of the hour or lower thirds will be modified to convey an urgency, as well. These breaks are referred to as Newsflash or Special Report. Before 24-hour news networks existed, such interruptions were restricted to extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
