Whether you’re a fan of news channels or not, you probably have an idea of what “breaking news” means. It’s a term applied to a story that is the most interesting to viewers. It can last for a few minutes or hours.
When news breaks during prime time, the broadcaster may decide to interrupt programming. This can be as simple as showing a live shot of the anchor or as complex as integrating analysis of the story.
Some programs may be rescheduled, while others may continue in the interim. If the news is a significant one, the broadcaster may pause the program to allow for other network affiliates to join the feed.
In some cases, a broadcaster may even make the claim that they’re the first to break the news. The network may even use the reverse countdown, which is usually five seconds.
The term “breaking news” was first used by CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite during the coverage of the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy.
Another early example was the September 11 attacks. During the coverage, a sketchy version of the story was shown to viewers. This was because the event was deemed to be the “first” of its kind.
In a break in the news, an anchor may mention that more information will be available on local television. They may also cut to video of the event. In the event of a local television newscast, the reporter may be in the right place at the right time to relay more details.
