A major story in a newspaper is the headline. The headline is usually the largest, bold print on the centerfold and is designed to capture the attention of prospective buyers. In the digital world, current news is driven by readership, and it can change within minutes. Trending news, on the other hand, is based on the number of web page hits. It is reader-focused, and stories with ‘buzz’ often trend. However, these stories often have little impact on society.
During prime time, a breaking news event may interrupt popular television shows. It may interrupt a newly-created show, or a highly-rated show with little time left on the air. In April 2017, ABC interrupted a Scandal episode due to the Shayrat missile strike. If this happened in your area, you may want to pause your local news program until the news is settled. If this happens, local stations can re-join or join the “extended edition” of the news show.
