The streaming news industry is on the rise. With the proliferation of smartphones, internet-connected televisions, and other devices, audiences are more readily able to access news and information. In many ways, it’s the new frontier.

Major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to create a news-streaming business. These companies offer regular nightly news programs, documentaries, and reruns. Their goal is to repurpose content that’s already on the air.

The major networks also invest in local coverage. CBS News, for instance, plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022. Meanwhile, Fox Nation has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its streaming app.

For a long time, the broadcast news business has been profitable. But in the last few years, a new wave of streaming competitors has entered the fray.

For instance, the free news streamers are trying to lure viewers away from cable TV. They want to resemble the format of a cable news outlet, and they’re doing a good job of it.

The major streaming networks have repurposed their content from the cable channels. This isn’t to say they’ve taken on partisan news organizations, such as MSNBC. But they’ve created niche audiences who are interested in specific topics.

A number of them are even using nostalgia to educate. For example, the SciTechDaily, which covers space and astronomy, offers a trove of facts.

Streaming news arrives on demand, and it travels wherever the viewer is. It allows them to customize their experience. Users can block topics, share their opinions, and express their feelings.
