When an event occurs that is deemed to be of enough importance that non-news programming needs to be interrupted, it’s often called breaking news. This is especially common for events that are a national concern that require nationwide coverage and multiple stations to be involved in the coverage. When this happens, a special ticker is usually displayed to alert viewers that news will be coming in a short amount of time. Sometimes the news will be introduced with a special graphic, accompanied by a distinctive music cue. Prior to 24-hour news networks, this was done through cut-ins on regular programming and newscasts.
