When news breaks, the television or radio station that is broadcasting the breaking story will interrupt the current non-news programming it is airing (or, for local stations, if it has not yet begun its evening newscast). This occurs by alerting all of its affiliates to stand by via an internal alert service used by their master control.
Upon interruption, the network’s news feed will usually start off with an opening graphic with music (such as “The Pulse of Events” by John Williams) which conveys a sense of urgency and emphasis on the importance of the news. The station then cuts to the network’s news anchor and a brief report on the breaking news.
If there is a significant amount of information to report on the breaking news, a live shot of the breaking news may be shown or it may be passed to an on-site reporter to give additional details as they are received. Depending on the extent of the news, breaking news coverage can last for only a few minutes or extend for hours or days at a time.
The end of the breaking news will typically include a graphic and voiceover stating that more details are coming as they become available. In some cases, it will also contain a disclaimer to direct viewers to the network’s website or the station’s local newscast for more information.
For many breaking news stories, stations and networks use the term “breaking news” interchangeably with “special report” or “special coverage”. Nevertheless, it is still often used to identify a news event that warrants a pre-empted segment of regular programming.
