Current News is a type of programming on broadcast television that involves the interruption of a regular program in order to report on a breaking news event. Usually the interrupting is due to an emergency, but it may also be due to a political figure’s death, or a severe weather event (see Weather coverage).
In addition, certain events that are anticipated by broadcasters, such as speeches or elections, can lead to programming pre-emptions, such as in the United States when presidential candidates deliver their speeches on television or when an inauguration occurs. A similar phenomenon occurs for major sports events, as well as for political crises and natural disasters.
Coverage on network and local stations typically begins with an opening graphic, often featuring a music score or other musical accompaniment (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events” composed by John Williams), followed by the introduction of a news anchor who welcomes the viewer to the broadcast and introduces the story at hand. Details of the story are provided in a rapid, often incomplete manner, and may be augmented with additional information provided by reporters at the scene.
Once the news event has been reported, the newscast is usually closed by a disclaimer or promo that invites viewers to see the network’s news division website for more details and other resources. If the event occurs during a late local newscast, the anchor may remind viewers that more details are available on their local station or will be featured on the network’s evening or overnight news program.
