Trending is a news segment that talks about the top stories currently making headlines. It’s usually introduced by an anchor with a short clip of the story and a unique music cue. The segment may be a special report or a break in regular programming (such as when severe weather is occurring). Depending on the severity of the event, this breaking news can last a few minutes or for hours or days. Until the emergence of 24-hour news networks, stations typically only interrupted non-news programming for breaking news events that were extremely urgent, such as a terrorist attack or the assassination of a president. When a news event is significant enough to warrant an interruption, broadcasters will alert their affiliates and usually provide a countdown for the station to join the network feed and start the special report.
