When an event occurs that elicits immediate, national coverage and requires an interruption of regular programming (or in the case of a network newscast, a countdown sequence), the broadcaster will usually alert all affiliates and tell them to stand by for the next newscast. If an emergency situation persists, a special report may be produced from the studio or a breaking news ticker can be used during the program. The newsflash or special report is often accompanied by a distinctive music cue and a graphic designed to convey a sense of urgency. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions were generally reserved for events that demanded urgent coverage such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy or a major weather event.
