Trending is a term used by many radio and television news programs to describe breaking stories that have a high degree of urgency or are highly relevant to viewers or listeners. Generally, these stories require a break in regular programming or national network newscasts to cover. A special graphic is usually overlaid on the lower third of a TV screen and a radio station’s broadcast may be interrupted by an alert crawl that includes a countdown. Before 24-hour news networks existed, breaks in programming were generally reserved for national events of great significance such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or severe weather events such as land-falling hurricanes that required immediate, nationwide coverage.
