Breaking news is a form of journalism that reports on an event occurring in real-time, usually one that warrants immediate national coverage and requires a network or local station to interrupt its normal programming to deliver the information. The breaking story is often preceded by a warning that the regular program will be interrupted, and the station may use a special graphic with a distinctive music cue to alert its viewers to the change. Alternatively, networks such as NBC use “Newsflash” or a Special Report ticker during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for an in-studio interruption.
