Breaking news is a television and radio term for an event that warrants an interruption of normal programming to deliver the latest information about it. Breaking news is often accompanied by a ticker graphic, with lower thirds and other graphics altered to convey a sense of urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news interruptions were limited to events that triggered nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to break away from regular schedules in order to provide live coverage (for example, the assassination of John F. Kennedy). NBC currently uses a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphic for select breaking news stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
