A news event that is breaking or imminent and requires the interruption of non-news programming. The news event may be the result of a fire, terrorist attack, police action, or other major happening. Typically, a break is preceded by a network alert that informs affiliates of the breaking news. The broadcaster then pauses the regular program and initiates the newscast. If the break is to last for multiple hours or days, lower thirds are often modified to indicate the length of the break and a countdown sequence is used to alert viewers that the newscast will resume soon. Breaking news reports can also be displayed in the form of a ticker on a regular TV or radio station’s lower thirds during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for a full-length break.
