It is commonly used for natural disasters, severe weather events, and political news, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous network affiliates to stop regular programming. It often begins with a countdown, followed by a special graphic and distinctive music cues. In addition, lower thirds may be altered to convey urgency. In recent years, 24-hour news networks have started using Special Report tickers to cover breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
