Current News (also known as Breaking News, Special Report or Special Coverage) is a broadcasting term for a story that is breaking in real time. It typically involves a newsworthy event that warrants interruption of regular programming in order to report on the events unfolding, such as a terrorist attack or natural disaster.
In television, breaking news coverage may be a continuous broadcast or an extended series of short segments. If it is a continuous broadcast, the network or local station will normally employ an opening graphic featuring music (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events” composed by John Williams) that adds an emphasis on the importance of the news at hand.
On radio, breaking news coverage is typically more specialized and structured to convey an urgent or even frantic sense of urgency to the listener. Some radio stations even require a breaking news theme to be used only for true news events, such as the announcement of a bombing, or the death of an important figure.
Breaking news on the radio usually begins with a bulletin or alert (usually a short, two-seconds long, loop) that announces the story in question. This is often followed by a brief summary of the events in question, with lower-third graphics that may include images or video from the incident being covered.
The news is then delivered with a brief disclaimer stating that the station will have more details to share with viewers later in the day, or during the next scheduled program, if the news is relevant for the time frame. The disclaimer may also include a link to the news department’s website.
