The term Breaking News refers to a news story that is deemed so urgent that it requires an interruption of regular non-news programming or, at the very least, a brief pause in a regularly scheduled newscast. Such an interruption may last only a few seconds, or it may span several hours or days, depending on the nature of the news item being covered. Often, the breaking news is announced by a graphic and distinctive music cue, which will appear on a TV or radio screen alongside a network feed, asking affiliates to stand by while it switches to a special report.
