In the world of broadcast news, breaking news refers to a story that warrants an interruption in regular programming to cover. Often, this includes a brief live report delivered by a network news anchor with accompanying graphic and music cue. Historically, this was limited to severe weather events and stories of national significance, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required nationwide coverage and caused numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming. Since the advent of 24-hour news networks, however, this practice has become more commonplace and is now a staple of many news programs.

NPR’s Trending looks at the stories that are making headlines this week:

* Iran is using drones that cost in the thousands to fight American missiles that cost millions. NPR investigates how this affordable strategy is reshaping the balance of power around the world.
* A Utah jury convicted Kouri Richins of murdering her husband by spiking his drink with the powerful drug fentanyl. She was seeking millions from his multiple life insurance policies.
