It also typically includes a graphic with a distinctive music cue, and lower thirds may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking-news breaks were rare; however, since then they have become more common, with some events eliciting nationwide coverage and prompting multiple stations to interrupt their programming.
