When an event occurs that warrants an immediate break in current non-news or regularly scheduled news coverage (and in some cases, for national network newscasts, a countdown to allow affiliates to switch over to the network feed), the newscast typically begins with a graphic and distinctive music cue. Then the reporter, usually a news anchor, is introduced and the story is told. Depending on the importance of the event, breaking news may require only a short report or sustained coverage for multiple hours or even days. This type of reporting is commonly known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report.” Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were typically limited to events that demanded nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt programming.
