The words “breaking news” and “special report” refer to two different uses of the term. The first one refers to the television program, while the second one refers to a Flash episode. Depending on the news outlet, these words can mean anything from an accident to a political incident. During these times, anchors may remind viewers to check local cable news channels or their network website to get the latest updates. However, when the news event is breaking, an anchor may cut the coverage and instead air a story.

Breaking news events can disrupt prime-time television programs. This can affect highly rated programs and new programming, especially if they don’t have much time left to air. The April 2017 Shayrat missile strike interrupted a Scandal episode on ABC. This was a particularly problematic moment for the network, which had to find something more important to show the public. However, the news was largely unrelated to the program, so the interruption didn’t negatively impact the quality of the show.
