When a news event occurs that requires immediate and sustained coverage, broadcasters interrupt non-news programming to provide a breaking-news report. This coverage may last for a few minutes, or for several hours or days. It may be reported live in-studio, or a network feed is sent to local stations across the country for them to insert their station identification and program reminders during the report. Historically, only severe weather events such as hurricanes and tornadoes prompted such an interruption in regular programming. Breaking-news reports are often referred to as newsflashes or special report, and they were rarely seen outside of national network newscasts prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks.
