Trending is a topic or story that is of a current interest to the news media. It is usually of a more urgent nature than a typical news report. This could be a current issue, such as a natural disaster or terrorist attack. It may also be a more general news topic, such as a celebrity’s latest public appearance or the latest movie release.
When an event or story warrants interruption of regular programming, the broadcaster will typically notify its affiliate stations via a message service (such as a phone or text) to stand by for the special report. The feed will then pause for a few seconds to allow for affiliates to switch to the network’s feed, and an opening graphic may be rolled (usually featuring music, such as “The Pulse of Events”, by John Williams) before the news anchor begins to introduce the breaking story.
During the special report, the news anchor will usually remind viewers that more details will be available on their local newscast later in the day or the network’s overnight news program. Programming that is new to air, highly rated or has time left in its schedule may be joined in progress or started back up at the point of interruption.
If the news event continues for a longer period of time, the coverage can be integrated into the regular schedule of the broadcaster through analysts in-studio, by phone or satellite, or by broadband (B-GAN). Commercial advertising may be suspended during the reporting of the special report, though this is uncommon.
