For the first time in 32 years, tens of thousands of New Yorkers are bracing to begin the workweek without the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) after workers at the busiest commuter railroad in North America went on strike over the weekend.
More than 300,000 daily commuters rely on the LIRR to get from Long Island to New York City. State and local officials were scrambling over the weekend to get contingency plans in place, but warned commuters to expect New York City buses and subways to be crowded on Monday.

When a news event occurs that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming, such as a sports game or regularly scheduled television newscasts, network affiliate stations will usually alert viewers to “stand by” for the breaking news. This may be done through the use of a special graphics package, a countdown sequence, or the usual station imaging promo or program reminder. Depending on the severity of the news event, regular commercial advertising may be suspended for sustained coverage. If the breaking news is to continue for a prolonged period of time, network affiliates may be required to insert their station identification at the top of the hour overlaid during the report, instead of through the usual means.
In the past, such news events requiring an interruption of regular programming were rare, but 24-hour news networks now commonly interrupt other types of programs for news that is considered to be urgent. The use of special graphics and lower thirds to convey a sense of urgency also helps.
